Bomb explodes under police officer’s car in Northern Ireland

A police officer has evaded an attempt on her life in Northern Ireland after a bomb partially exploded under her car on Tuesday morning. She was not in the vehicle when the device went off at about 8.30am just off the main Belfast to Bangor road.

Security sources in the region said they believed the bomb had been placed there by one of the dissident republican groups opposed to the peace process. Army bomb disposal experts were rushed to the scene of the explosion on the Ballyrobert Road.

A spokesman for the Police Service of Northern Ireland said: “Following initial inquiries at the scene, ATO (ammunition technical officers) have been tasked to conduct an examination of the vehicle.”

PSNI spokesman said the main A2 road between Belfast and Bangor had been closed earlier on Tuesday morning while an investigation into the incident continued.
