Bahrain jails five people over critical tweets

Five Bahrainis have been jailed over critical tweets, as the Gulf state continues its crackdown on opposition to the Manama regime.

Bahrain said the suspects were arrested for tweets that “defame individuals” and “incite sedition”. The director general of anti-corruption and economic and electronic security said the suspects include three public sector workers, one worker in the private sector and an unemployed individual.

The suspects were “involved in setting up tendentious accounts on which they posted abusive tweets, while others provided them with information and helped them to post them”.

Sheikh Nasser Bin Hamad al-Khalifa of the royal guard said the state would enforce a zero-tolerance policy for anyone who criticises the king or country’s other leaders.

Earlier this week, Bahrain said it would “hunt down” online dissidents, including those abroad. Activists such as Nabeel Rajab have been jailed for tweets critical of the government.

At Least 68 Dead as Riot and Fire Engulf a Venezuela Police Station

Officials say 68 people are dead after a riot and fire erupted Wednesday night at a Venezuelan jail.

The blaze at the Valencia city police station’s lockup was reportedly sparked by prisoners setting mattresses alight in a jailbreak attempt. Many are believed to have asphyxiated due to smoke inhalation.

Nearly all the victims were inmates, Tarek Saab, the chief state prosecutor, revealed on Twitter. Two women visiting the station overnight also died.

He said four attorneys have been assigned to investigate the incident.

Families are demanding answers and justice amid one of the worst prison catastrophes to hit the nation, where penitentiary conditions have frequently been decried by human rights activists.

Iowa family of four found dead in Mexican resort town

Goes drug cartels are guilty?

Mexican authorities said there are no indications of violence in the deaths of four members of an Iowa family found in a condominium where they were vacationing near the resort town of Tulum.

The Mexican Embassy in Washington, D.C., and the office of the attorney general for the state of Quintana Roo on Mexico’s Caribbean coast both told NBC News that no indications of a struggle or crime were found on the bodies or in the condominium where the Sharp family was staying.

“So far, no signs of violence have been found,” said Paulina Chávez Alonzo, spokeswoman for the embassy.

Cancún: from tourist beach paradise to hotbed of Mexico’s drug violence

The murder of an alleged cartel boss in his hospital bed is the latest outrage in a resort city torn by trafficking and corruption.

The Playamed hospital is an unremarkable two-storey building on a quiet street lined with red-blossomed flame trees, just a few minutes’ drive from the white-sand beaches and all-inclusive resorts of Cancún’s hotel zone.

Recently, however, it was the setting for an incident underlining the relentless spread of Mexico’s drug war to cities previously best known as beach holiday destinations.

Four gunmen burst into a private room at the clinic last week, where they shot dead Alfonso Contreras Espinoza and his wife. Known as “El Poncho”, the murdered man was reputed to be the local boss for the Gulf cartel, and had been released from a local prison to receive treatment for a leg problem.

Investigators discovered a bag of white powder under his leg and a scale, suggesting that Contreras had been dealing from his sickbed.

On a recent morning, hospital officials declined to comment on the brazen attack. Paramedics standing in the shade outside looked away or stared into their smartphones when asked about the incident.

Not so long ago, Cancún sparkled as the crown jewel of Mexico’s Mayan Riviera. But rampant corruption, chaotic development and a string of murders have all tarnished the resort city’s reputation.

From glamour to gunfire: the tourist city of Acapulco torn apart by violence Other tourist hotspots have also been caught in Mexico’s red tide: Acapulco, once the country’s most glamorous beach spot, is now the setting for relentless gang violence; late last year, the bodies of six men were left hanging from bridges near Los Cabos on the Baja California peninsula.

Earlier this month, a Mexican thinktank named Los Cabos the world’s most dangerous city outside a war zone.

US worries over China’s expanding role in Africa

Concerns in Washington are growing amid reports that China is poised to gain control of a major commercial port on the Horn of Africa, further consolidating the country’s influence in the critically strategic region.

In late February, the Djibouti government terminated a contract with Dubai-based port operator DP World to run the Doraleh Container Terminal (DCT), on the grounds it was “contrary to the fundamental interests of the nation.”

The port is partly owned by China’s state-owned China Merchants Port Holdings, which maintains a 23.5% stake in the port’s parent company, Port de Djibouti SA.

It is also located immediately adjacent to China’s only overseas military base, on the west bank of the Gulf of Aden and the southern entrance to the Red Sea, close to the Suez Canal.

Bomb explodes under police officer’s car in Northern Ireland

A police officer has evaded an attempt on her life in Northern Ireland after a bomb partially exploded under her car on Tuesday morning. She was not in the vehicle when the device went off at about 8.30am just off the main Belfast to Bangor road.

Security sources in the region said they believed the bomb had been placed there by one of the dissident republican groups opposed to the peace process. Army bomb disposal experts were rushed to the scene of the explosion on the Ballyrobert Road.

A spokesman for the Police Service of Northern Ireland said: “Following initial inquiries at the scene, ATO (ammunition technical officers) have been tasked to conduct an examination of the vehicle.”

PSNI spokesman said the main A2 road between Belfast and Bangor had been closed earlier on Tuesday morning while an investigation into the incident continued.

Burkina Faso Islamic extremists, 7 soldiers killed in attacks on French Embassy and army HQ

Attackers in Burkina Faso’s capital killed eight people and wounded dozens more in a coordinated assault on the army headquarters and French embassy that France’s foreign minister said was likely carried out by“terrorist groups”.

West Africa’s arid Sahel region is suffering a spike in violence by militant groups, some with links to al Qaeda and Islamic State, that is drawing an increasingly aggressive response from countries including France and the United States.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, which is the third major assault on Ouagadougou in just over two years. Previous attacks were conducted by allies of al Qaeda in reprisal for Burkina Faso’s participation in a regional fight against Islamist militants.

Assault on Damascus suburbs continues

Iran said pro-Damascus forces would press ahead with attacks on an insurgent enclave near the Syrian capital, as ground fighting raged on there in defiance of a U.N. resolution demanding a 30-day truce across the country.

Turkey, too, said its military operations in another theatre of war in the north of Syria would not be affected by the unanimous Security Council vote demanding the truce to allow for aid access and medical evacuations.

Anti-government rebels said they clashed with pro-government forces near Damascus on Sunday, as rescuers and residents said warplanes struck some towns in the eastern Ghouta pocket.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said air strikes and artillery killed nine people and injured 31 in the eastern suburbs. The UK-based monitoring group said Sunday’s bombing was less intense than attacks over the past week.

The latest escalation by Damascus and its allies has killed more than 500 people in the enclave over the last week, the Observatory says.

The dead included more than 120 children. Signalling the war remained a top focus of world leaders, the Kremlin said Russian President Vladimir Putin and French and German counterparts Emmanuel Macron and Angela Merkel spoke by phone and discussed the ceasefire’s implementation.

Iranian General Mohammad Baqeri, whose government backs Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, said Tehran and Damascus would respect the U.N. resolution.
